Burn restrictions have been put in place across Anchorage and most of the state. As of today at 9 a.m., the municipality will be under a burn ban. Portable outdoor fireplaces may not be used, and campfires, burn pits and open fires on the ground are not allowed in the municipality, according to a release from Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz's office. Electric, gas and charcoal barbecue grills and enclosed pellet grills will be allowed. The burn ban has been put in effect because of the very high fire danger that is expected to get worse in the next several weeks, as well as the concern of a shortage of available state or federal assistance, the release says. Also in the municipality, burn permits are no longer allowed, as well as the burning of yard debris, using burn barrels or burning trash, construction material or firewood that is not cured, according to the release.
