VIDEO: A fire in the Northwest Arctic Borough community of Kivalina on Tuesday afternoon has cut off the village’s power and telephone service, according to authorities. Alaska State Troopers received a report of a blaze at the Kivalina Bingo Hall around 12:50 p.m. The fire later spread to the nearby Community Center building. The bingo hall and community center are both a total loss, according to the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative. In an email Wednesday, AVEC President Bill Stamm wrote the blaze also compromised nearby electrical infrastructure in the power plant and telephone office. Stamm said the power went out around 3 p.m. Tuesday and has not yet been restored. Long-distance and cell service to Kivalina are also currently off.
