An early morning fire Wednesday in the 300 block of South 12th Street in Gadsden resulted in a two-story duplex home being declared a total loss. According to Gadsden Fire Chief Stephen Carroll, firefighters responded to a call that came in just before 5 a.m. The fire became fully involved and began spreading across the upper floor into the second residence of the duplex. As the roof began to burn and threatened to collapse, firefighters were required to use aerial efforts to fight the blaze. Carroll said one resident was at the home when the fire began and while they were able to get out unburned, they were sent to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
