Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded at 11:27 p.m. to a report of a blaze at 3101 Court U. Firefighters were on the scene in two minutes and 42 seconds, said Batallion Chief Sebastian Carrillo, and learned the children’s parents had been able to get out but the children were still inside. They rushed into the second-story unit and pulled the children from the fire. Carrillo said both children - a 2-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl - suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Children’s of Alabama. They were in serious condition early Tuesday. The building contains at least eight apartment units. Two of the apartments on the second floor suffered fire damage. Carrillo said several other people were treated by medics on the scene but did not have to be transported. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
