The cost of new fire-rescue equipment is often well beyond the budget of small volunteer departments. But beginning eight o’clock Saturday morning in Eastern Geneva County, the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department will hold its “first-ever” boot drive. It’ll be located near the intersection of Highways 52 and” 49 South. Firefighters along with many family members will be on the side of the highway holding boots that you may place money into. For years, the Alabama “tobacco tax” covered the main expenses of volunteer departments. But as fewer people smoke, the revenue generated from the tax continually “drops”.
