The city of Ashville issued a statement saying, the John Looney House caught fire at 5:36 a.m. and was heavily involved when the Ashville Fire Department arrived. The statement said, "It is with a heavy heart that we report that there has been a fire at one of our cherished local landmarks." The Steele and Shoal Creek fire departments assisted in putting out the fire. The city said some of the contents were saved and there is hope that the house can be rebuilt. The St. Clair County Tourist Information Center said, "This historic 1818/1820 homestead was possibly the oldest double dog trot log house in the state."
