After only five years as part of the department’s fleet, the Coolidge Fire Department is looking to get rid of its smaller fire pumper. The reason, says Coolidge Fire Chief Mark Dillon, is that the pumper is ineffective. “Technically this vehicle that we have in our fleet is one of the most inefficient,” Dillon told council members Monday evening at the City Council meeting. “It is an expensive vehicle that is rarely used, mainly because it is not set up for the type of geography firefighting we do as far as urban firefighting.” Council approved the purchase in 2014, allocating $321,436 to buy the vehicle at the request of former Fire Chief Mickey McHugh. At the time, McHugh said he believed the smaller frame of the vehicle would be useful for responding to smaller calls around the city, and help preserve the lifespan of other vehicles on the department’s fleet.
