A natural-gas leak closed Phoenix roads late Tuesday morning and caused the Phoenix Fire Department to evacuate the surrounding area, officials said. Phoenix firefighters were called to a Jack in the Box restaurant at 1302 E. McDowell Road, near Seventh Street, just before 11:30 a.m. for reports of a natural-gas odor, said Capt. Rob McDade of the Phoenix Fire Department. When crews arrived, they started evacuating nearby businesses and investigating the gas odor. "Firefighters found a broken gas meter that appears to have been struck by a vehicle," McDade said. Phoenix firefighters had secured the leak by noon and shut off gas from the meter. Shortly before 1 p.m. gas reading levels were at zero in the area, McDade said.
