At least 40 people were displaced from Arizona State University residential housing after a fire on a stove in the high-rise Friday morning, according to Tempe fire officials. Crews responded to the fire near Veterans Way and College Avenue where smoke was coming from the eighth floor of the University Towers residential housing in Tempe, officials said. Sprinklers activated in the building and kept the fire from spreading, according to fire officials. Crews entered the apartment where the fire started and found food had been left burning on the stove. No residents or firefighters were injured. ASU housing maintenance confirmed at least 16 apartment units were affected by water damage from the sprinklers.
