VIDEO: A man whose smashed car was found hanging above a steep canal embankment early Thursday in Phoenix is recovering in a hospital, authorities said.
Phoenix police said the single-vehicle accident would shut down Grand and 27th avenues in all directions for several hours.
The unidentified man was extricated from the wreckage by Phoenix firefighters. When first responders reached the site, they attached chains to the car and pulled it back from the edge of the embankment. The driver’s injuries weren’t life-threatening, police said in an email.
Cause of the crash was being investigated, but police said the car had not hit a train.
A few years ago, the Federal Railroad Administration listed five railroad crossings along Grand Avenue among the most dangerous in the country.
