A woman and a dog were killed in an apartment fire early Monday morning, fire officials say. According to Chris James with the Glendale Fire Department, the fire broke out on the patio of one of the lower units at an apartment complex near 51st and Northern avenues. James said the fire quickly spread into the apartment and moved into the apartment on the second floor. The occupants of the lower unit where the fire started, Wilma Vancil and her partner, Don, said they were asleep and woke up to a pounding at their door. "The only thing I could grab was our two dogs," said Vancil. "It was like the flames coming in through the sliding glass door. It was scary." Family members identified the woman killed in the fire as Heather Williams. Two other adults in the unit were able to get out safely but a man suffered severe burns.
