The Thumb Fire in Grand Canyon National Park has grown to over 6,700 acres since lightning strikes from isolated thunderstorms in the area sparked the blaze last Thursday. The wildfire is 0% contained as of Tuesday.
Fire crews are currently monitoring incoming weather as continuing thunderstorm conditions and gusty winds have limited the amount of personnel that can safely be deployed into the remote and rugged fire area, said incident management spokesperson Dolores Garcia.
Much of the fire burns on the Havasupai Reservation on the Great Thumb Mesa. The flames also extend into the surrounding Grand Canyon National Park. No evacuation orders have been issued for communities nearby the fire, and there is no active threat to structures or homes, Garcia said.
