PHOTOS: A day after a freight train derailed, multiple cars caught on fire and part of the Tempe Town Lake bridge collapsed, a tank car carrying cyclohexanone that had cracked open and leaked was uprighted and the leak was secured overnight, authorities said Thursday morning.
As crews continued to work on the derailed train Thursday morning, flames and smoke could be seen blazing on several of the cars.
“We will continue to monitor the situation for any flare-ups,” said Andrea Glass, Tempe Fire and Medical Department spokesperson, as hot spots can begin smoldering again.
Morning television news reports showed workers at the scene with heavy equipment.
Officials said more information will be provided at a media briefing later on Thursday. Barricades blocked streets all around Tempe Town Lake and police shooed away people for whom exercising around the lake is part of their daily routine.
