A crash involving a Valley Metro light rail train early Sunday morning left the driver of a car dead and the conductor of the train in stable condition.
The crash occurred near Center Parkway and Washington Street in Tempe around 12:21 a.m., according to authorities.
Police and firefighters arrived at the scene of the crash, which caused a substantial fire as the car crashed into the front end of the light rail train. Search and Rescue crews helped locate the victims and requested two ambulances upon arrival. The driver of the car was only identified as a man and authorities said he died at the scene.
According to ABC 15, no passengers were on the train at the time of the crash, and no other injuries were reported. Detectives are working to determine whether or not impairment was a factor in the crash.
