A new wildfire has burned hundreds of acres in a forest on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
On Sunday, the BIA Forestry & Wildland Fire Management—Fort Apache Agency said that the Bear Fire has grown to 600 acres.
It is located about five miles west of Cibecue and is burning in Pinyon-Juniper and grassland. Officials say the eastern flank of the fire was active on Saturday.
Air tankers dropped retardant on the fire, but firefighters on the ground could not reach the site because of limited road access.
Officials say air and ground resources, including a Type 6 Engine, Fort Apache Hotshots and Fort Apache Fuels Crew, are battling the blaze.
It is not known what initially sparked the flames.
