Firefighters made good progress overnight slowing the spread of a Lake County wildfire that broke out early Thursday afternoon near Clearlake, forcing the evacuation of a 250-home neighborhood.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, the Golf fire covered 33 acres – up from 19 acres Thursday evening - and had been 30 percent contained, said Cal Fire spokesman Will Powers.
Named for its proximity to the Buckingham Golf Course, the Golf fire was burning on the edge of the Riviera West and Buckingham Park subdivisions. Residents in those areas were ordered to evacuate, and five roads near the golf course were closed.
Residents of Riviera West will be allowed to return to their homes Friday afternoon, according to Powers.
Hundreds of firefighters from multiple agencies checked the blaze overnight, “despite steep terrain and heavy timber,” said Powers.
Crews will spend Friday “putting in containment lines, and strengthening current containment lines.”
