San Luis Obispo firefighters climb 69 flights of stairs of a Seatle building for cancer fundraiser

San Luis Obispo County Fire and Cal Fire firefighters participated in the 28th annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Firefighter Stairclimb on Sunday. The LLS stair climb took place at the Columbia Center in Seattle, Washington. The event is a fundraiser held annually to help raise funds to find a cure. Local firefighter team members also showed support for Ryan Teixeira by decorating their helmets with pictures of Teixeira and the hashtag #17STRONG. Teixeira was an Arroyo Grande native who played both baseball and football at Arroyo Grande High School. Teixeira passed away in 2017 following a battle with Leukemia. Participants climbed 69 flights of stairs in their full gear weighing over 50 pounds. This event has helped raise over $17 million so far since it started in 1991.
