After more than a year, Manhattan Beach has a new fire chief. The city announced the appointment of Daryn Drum, a 30-year veteran of emergency services who will serve as the city’s 13th fire chief, in a statement Tuesday, March 19. Drum most recently served as Division Chief of Administrative Services for Heartland Fire & Rescue, a consolidated fire district near San Diego, according to city officials. “We are excited to bring Daryn Drum on board and welcome him to the Manhattan Beach family,” City Manager Bruce Moe said. The new chief’s first day on the job will be April 8, 2019, at which point he will assume duties from interim leader and Police Chief Derrick Abell. Drum comes to the city after Chief Robert Espinosa retired following a vote of no confidence from firefighters in the department in January 2018.
