VIDEO: Fresno Fire Crews 1 & 3 were recognized with the Lifesaving Medal at the 2019 Awards & Promotional Ceremony. The crew was honored for the saving the life of a local back in in 2018. The crews were getting back from a call on October 4, 2018 when another call came in. Fire Crew 1 Captain Bruce Peter said the conditions that day were very dangerous. "Tones went off again," said Peter. "It was the middle of the night, I believe, and it was pouring down rain. We couldn't even go light and sirens because we were going half our normal speed." The call was for a fire at what firefighters believed to be a vacant home on E. Grant. When first responders arrived, the roof was covered in flames, rain was pouring down, but that wasn't all. "Someone came running up and said there is someone under the house or their hand is showing from the side of the house," said Peter. Peter said the roaring flames and overflowing gutters created unsurvivable conditions, but that didn't stop first responders from continuing to rescue the man who was fighting for each breath.
