A vegetation fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the hills south of Palm Springs was 20% contained as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, fire officials said. Multiple fire agencies descended on Palm Springs Tuesday afternoon to battle the fire whose origin was considered "suspicious," fire officials said. Although fire authorities put the size of the fire at 200 acres on Tuesday, on Wednesday morning they said the actual acreage was closer to 140 acres, based on measurements collected by aircraft. Capt. Nathan Gunkel said that about 100 firefighters were at the scene and that the progression of the fire had stopped. Firefighters are expected to be working on containment throughout the day into Wednesday night. The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. just east of the Smoke Tree Stables and south of the Bob Hope house in the Southridge section of the city, fire officials said. The hill directly behind the stables was steep and rocky terrain that challenged firefighters.
