VIDEO: Firefighters halted the advancing flames of a vegetation fire that started Monday afternoon in Calaveras County. The Acorn Fire is south of Valley Springs near Hogan Dam Road close to New Hogan Lake, Cal Fire said. As of 2:15 p.m., the fire has burned at least 15 acres, up from 10 acres reported at 2:04 p.m. by Cal Fire. At 2:23 p.m., Cal Fire stopped the forward progress of the fire, which is when crews stop a fire from spreading in a particular direction(s). Crews were attacking the fire from the air. As of 1:43 p.m. Monday, flames and a large plume of smoke could be seen. Typically, after forward progress is stopped, crews will be in the mop-up phase, which means that they will spend time fully extinguishing any section of where the fire burned to prevent any flare-ups.
