VIDEO: There is no greater sacrifice first responders can make than to lose their lives in the line of duty.
Wednesday, there was a groundbreaking ceremony to benefit the expansion of the California Firefighters Memorial Wall. The wall at Capitol Park in Sacramento has the names of more than 1,527 firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty in California since 1850.
Organizers said the current wall has run out of space.
Brian K. Rice, the President of California Professional Firefighters, said, "Job-related cancer is now the leading cause of death for firefighters, and sadly, more names will be added every year."
Rice shared that 35 names were added to the wall last year, and half of them were because of cancer.
