Greeley firefighters on Tuesday extinguished a house fire that resulted in about $290,000 of property damage.
Firefighters responded about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday to the 1400 block of 40th Avenue. The fire appeared to reach into the attic of the home. Three fire engines, two ladder trucks, two battalion chiefs and a medical unit responded, for a total of 21 personnel. Crews were on scene for almost four hours making sure any hot spots were extinguished. No injuries were reported.
The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by improper disposal of smoking materials. The Greeley Fire Department reminds residents to be mindful of smoking materials and ensure they’re properly disposed of.
The National Fire Prevention Association reports home fires started by smoking materials killed an average of 590 annually from 2012-2016. Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths, according to the NFPA.
