A child who was taken to the hospital following an apartment fire near Vickers Drive and North Academy Boulevard has died, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD), and the cause of the fire has been determined by investigators. In an update, CSFD said the fire that occurred on the morning of Saturday, March 9 at the Berkshire Apartments on Dortmund Drive was accidental, caused by unattended items on the stove. Crews originally responded to the complex just before 7 a.m. on March 9 after callers to 911 reported that a hallway in the building was full of smoke. When crews arrived, they found “heavy smoke” coming from the first floor. As they were working to get the fire under control, firefighters found a child in the apartment where the fire was coming from.
