Burning garbage truck drove to East Great Plain Fire Department to be extinguished

VIDEO: Crews responded to a garbage truck fire in Norwich Wednesday afternoon, but they didn’t have to go far. Shortly before 2 p.m., members of the East Great Plain Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the parking lot at 488 New London Turnpike - their own address. According to officials, the garbage truck’s driver was alerted to the fire by passing motorists on West Main Street, fire officials said. He drove the Willimantic Waste Paper Company garbage truck, filled with bulky waste and flames, into the parking lot of the fire department, officials said. At about 2:15 p.m., firefighters, who were in the station at the time, were seen hosing down hot spots and extinguishing the fire in five to 10 minutes. There were no injuries in the fire and it’s under investigation, officials said.
