PHOTOS: Fire Chief John Alston is set to meet with city and state police this afternoon as the investigation into Sunday’s fire at the Diyanet Mosque of New Haven continues and the congregation seeks a new place to worship.
Alston declined to comment further about the fire at approximately 12 p.m., saying he would be able to release more information after the meeting.
On Monday morning, a police car was parked in the otherwise-empty lot outside the mosque. Soon after noon, there was a truck from the New Haven Fire Department’s fire investigation unit at the scene as well.
Yellow tape reading “police line — do not cross” barred entry to the house of worship, which had been partially blackened by flames.
Mosque President Haydar Elevli said local churches had offered the congregation a place to hold services after Sunday’s fire, but no decision had been made as to where they’ll hold services.
Elevli said he was unsure of the extent of the damage at the mosque, but thankful no one was hurt.
