Thirteen people were evacuated from an apartment complex off 300 Eastern St. Thursday morning after a break in a water pipe caused a 10-foot by 10-foot sinkhole on the grounds of the building, according to Deputy Fire Chief Tim Kieley. The sinkhole was discovered at about 4:30 a.m. within the complex, reports said. Dan Doyle, a spokesman for the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority, said the break was in a service line that leads from the condominium complex to the main water line. Eastern Street is closed to traffic. As a precaution, six families including 13 people were evacuated while gas and water crews are dealing with the sinkhole, Kieley said. The sinkhole is not on Eastern Street, but within the grounds of an apartment complex just off Eastern Street, Kieley said.
