One firefighter was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Saturday after a fire broke out at a downtown Norwich convenience store. According to a Norwich Fire Department press release, crews responded to a structure fire at the R&A Convenience Store just after 2 p.m., arriving to find, “heavy black smoke pushing out the front door of the store” and along the eaves of the historic building. Mutual aid calls brought firefighters from Mohegan Tribal FAST and the East Great Plains volunteer department. Melted signs at R & A Convenience Store that remains closed Monday after a weekend fire in downtown Norwich. The fire, which was contained to the convenience store and spread from the area where drink coolers are located, was extinguished in about 15 minutes before ventilation work proceeded for roughly two hours.
