Piles of trash caught on fire at a transfer station in New London on Wednesday morning. Firefighters were called to the CWPM transfer station on Fourth Street around 3 a.m. after a fire alarm was activated. The transfer station is described as a large-scale transfer station with rail access for the removal of construction debris that is delivered to the facility. When crews arrived, they said they found smoke coming from the transfer station. According to crews, there is a deep seated fire under piles of trash in the building. Sprinklers in the building took care of some of the fire. Employees are using excavators to dig down the trash to expose the flames so they can be extinguished. Crews from several departments including New London Fire Department, Waterford Fire Department, Submarine Base Fire Department and Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department are assisting.
