Fairfield firefighters say they spent a few hours putting out a brush fire Tuesday. The flames broke out in the woods off Greenfield Street around 4 p.m. Fire Chief Denis McCarthy says less than an acre burned. He says crews used a drone to monitor hot spots. "Because it's a breezy afternoon and a large wooded area, we want to make sure we contain it so it doesn't jeopardize any homes or vehicles," McCarthy explained. McCarthy says because of the lack of snow cover this winter, the risk of brush fires is higher. There have been several other recent brush fires, including along I-95 near the Fairfield-Westport line. McCarthy urges caution for residents who use fire pits. "If they have a fire pit in their backyard, use their screen to keep the embers contained," McCarthy said. "And if they do have a fire, always call 911 first."
