Every day across the country, seven people die in home fires. Many of these deaths can be prevented with a working smoke alarm and a fire escape plan.
The American Red Cross of Central Florida teamed up with Tampa Fire Rescue on Saturday to make sure families have those two essential -- lifesaving -- things.
Longtime red cross volunteer Dan Harter doesn't mind spending a few hours on a weekend helping others. The first home he visited did not have smoke alarms.
Homeowner Kate Mullin is happy they stopped by: "I felt guilty, somewhat guilty that I never put them in."
Harter is happy to help.
"This is the perfect home," he said. "This is exactly who we're targeting, homes that have no alarms. We're trying to save lives and it's working."
