Port Orange couple killed after plane crashes into front yard in Polk County

A couple from Port Orange are dead after a small plane crashed into a front yard in Bartow on Thursday, deputies say. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene on Weston Road around noon. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office confirms two people are dead. Those two individuals were in the aircraft. No one on the ground was hurt. The two people who died were a married couple inside the plane. The sheriff’s office has identified them as 73-year-old Bonnie Powell and 76-year-old Dennis Powell, of Port Orange. The crash happened close to Bartow Executive Airport. Officials said there were no signs of any distress and that the pilot was in contact with the airport, intending to land there. At this point, authorities are not saying what kind of aircraft crashed. Polk County Fire Rescue says they will not be making any kind of statement.
