One person was killed Monday in a mobile home fire in Brevard County, officials said. The fatal fire happened around 9 a.m. in the 2100 block of Rocway Drive in Palm Shores. Jason Mattern said he was the first to respond to his next-door neighbor’s home. “I ran out. I kicked in the door,” he said. But even kicking down the door didn’t clear the smoke enough to safely go inside so Mattern said later, a maintenance worker at the Mobile Land by the Sea neighborhood recovered the woman’s body. The county did not identify the woman Monday. Neighbors said she lived alone. The county confirmed a cat also died in the fire. “It was all kind of a blur,” Mattern said. Another neighbor said the woman who died was in her 50s.
