The results of a months-long study of Savannah’s Fire Department are in, and at Thursday’s city council workshop, Savannah’s elected leaders got to dive into the details. Staff from UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government reviewed the information. Their assessment turned up on everything from firefighter morale to department efficiencies. ?The Carl Vinson Institute staff came in the middle of last year to do the study, which is a top down assessment to give city leaders an idea of what the department has to work with, where it excels, and where there’s room for improvement. ?Only two percent of fire departments anywhere have achieved the accreditation and ISO rating goals Savannah Fire has, but in addition to highlighting what the fire department is doing right, the report revealed a suffering morale among firefighters, a lack of diversity, and a need for more staff.
