Ten people, including eight children, were displaced by a fire at an East Point apartment complex. The fire was reported at a building at the Mount Vernon Apartments on Harris Drive about 9 p.m., according to East Point Fire Department spokeswoman Renita Shelton. Residents were already being evacuated when firefighters arrived, Shelton said. Fire crews at the scene saw heavy smoke coming from the building, she said. They spotted flames on the second floor. Crews worked to put the fire out and brought it under control by 9:20 p.m., Shelton said. No injuries were reported in the incident. The American Red Cross is assisting the two adults and eight children who were displaced by the blaze, Shelton said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
