Former Savannah firefighter rescues driver after car crashes into canal

The following statement was issued by the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia Air National Guard: "The morning of June 25, 2020 an Airman from the 165th Airlift Wing, Air Support Operations Squadron pulled a man from a submerged vehicle after it crashed into the canal on Dean Forrest Rd. Staff Sgt. Cody Haffly saw distressed bystanders on the side of the road and pulled over. Haffly saw the submerged vehicle and learned there was a man still vehicle. Haffly got in the water, broke the back window of the vehicle and the victim expressed that he was having difficulty breathing. Haffly positioned the victim to ensure he was able to breathe and then assisted as Emergency Medical Crews made it to the scene. Staff Sgt. Cody Haffly's used his training as a firefighter and a tactical air control party member to get to the victim and treat him until EMS could arrive. Haffly's actions are a prime example of our core values of integrity, service before self, and excellence in all we do."
