Fire safety education will now be more accessible for some students who are learning from home.
The Savannah Fire Department is creating virtual lessons and fire station tours ahead of fire prevention month in October with a $5,000 grant from the Hartford Insurance Company as part of their Junior Fire Marshal program.
Fire leaders say the money will be used to widen their reach to students.
“We want to make it entertaining, but educational at the same time,” Deputy Fire Marshal Cheryl Mason said.
Officials with the Savannah Fire Dept. said the Hartford Insurance Company donated $10,000 to them in the past to update their fire safety house, a tool for students to learn how to prevent and escape home fires.
But with in-person tours and school visits canceled, officials said it’s more important now for kids to learn proper fire safety.
