VIDEO: After 11 years of operating out of a temporary trailer fire station, Savannah Fire has opened a permanent one in the Highlands area.
Savannah Fire officials, city leaders and residents of the Highlands celebrated the grand opening of Station 14 Wednesday morning with a hose-uncoupling ceremony, which is the fire department's version of a ribbon-cutting.
“Our first district Highlands neighbors and our Savannah firefighters deserve this permeant state-of-the-art facility to protect our families, to protect our neighbors and homes in this neighborhood, and to be served to the best of the city’s ability,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson. The Highlands are located near Pooler. The area is one of the fastest-growing communities in Savannah, according to Johnson, which is one of the reasons city leaders chose to use $3.8 million of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) to fund the new station.
