Around 7:45 p.m. Saturday evening, a Glynn County Fire Rescue unit was investigating smoke in the area of the 1900 block of Fifth Street in Brunswick. The crew found a house fire and requested a full alarm dispatched. Fire rescue began a search of the structure for victims. During the search, a flashover occurred trapping the two firefighters and a “mayday” was called. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a flashover is the sudden, simultaneous ignition of everything in a room. Heat radiates downward and intensifies until all combustible items reach their ignition temperatures and burst into flames. Temperatures can reach as much as 1,000 degrees. GCFD reported the two firefighters were able to exit the structure but both suffered burn injuries.
