Elderly couple in Dededo survives fire, woman escapes with minor injuries

An elderly couple is lucky to be alive after escaping their home, which was engulfed by fire early Sunday morning. The Guam Fire Department responded at 6:02 a.m. to the fire on Chalan Fago in Dededo, where the elderly couple lived in a wood-and-tin home. “Upon arrival, units found an approximately 50-foot-by-50-foot wood-and-tin structure fully engulfed. Units were able to have the fire under control within 20 minutes,” GFD spokesperson Nick Garrido reported an hour after firefighters responded. Garrido confirmed that both occupants were able to escape the fire. “An elderly female was injured while trying to escape. She was transported to GRMC with minor injuries,” Garrido said, adding that the man was not harmed.

Follow-up: Not guilty verdict in 2023 Guam Fire Department ambulance theft case

Not guilty on all counts. That’s the verdict a 12-person jury delivered on Thursday afternoon after about two hours of deliberation, clearing Jeff Meitawan of all charges related to the theft of a Guam Fire Department ambulance last year. Meitawan was indicted on charges of theft, theft of property, damaging government equipment and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, all with a special allegation of a crime against the community. The trial lasted just about a week in Superior Court Presiding Judge Alberto C. Lamorena III’s courtroom. “Obviously, I am happy with the verdict, as I always knew without question that Jeff did not steal the ambulance,” Meitawan’s attorney, Tyler Scott from the Alternate Public Defender, said. “The jury took about two hours to deliberate.”
