VIDEO/PHOTOS: Volunteers from across the island turned out to help clean the Korean Air Flight 801 memorial monument on Friday in Asan. The cleanup was held to prepare for the 25th-anniversary ceremony of the plane crash. The event will be from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the monument in Nimitz Hill. It will be open to the public and livestreamed on the governor’s Facebook page. KAL Flight 801 crashed into Nimitz Hill in the early morning of Aug. 6, 1997. It claimed the lives of 228 people out of the plane’s 254 passengers and crew. Joseph San Agustin, a pilot with Asia Pacific Airlines that was a Navy liaison officer with the National Transportation Safety Board at the time of the crash, organized the cleanup event with partners in the community. “What we are doing today is sprucing it up for tomorrow’s ceremony,” said San Agustin.
