The Honolulu Fire Department says a sprinkler helped control a three-alarm blaze that broke out from a Waikiki hotel Monday night. The call came in just after 8:30 p.m. Fifteen units staffed with 57 personnel responded to the fire at the Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger hotel on 2300 Kalakaua Ave. HFD said the blaze started near a room on the 14th floor, where a sprinkler helped prevent the flames from spreading. Occupants in a nearby unit reportedly requested help to evacuate but were told to shelter in place since the fire was being controlled by the sprinkler, HFD said. Fire officials said the fire was extinguished just before 9:15 p.m. All lanes of Kalakaua Ave were shut down and remained closed until 11 p.m. Drivers were rerouted onto Seaside Ave.
