The wildfire in Kahikinui that scorched at least several hundred acres on Thursday has been declared 100 percent, a fire official said. Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said in a news release around 9:30 a.m. today that personnel will continue monitoring the fire throughout the day. The cause of the fire is undetermined. The fire was first reported at 1:40 p.m. Thursday at Milepost 26 on Piilani Highway. At one point the highway was closed and later re-opened after more than several hours. At least a dozen homes in Kahikinui Homesteads were evacuated, but later that order was lifted Thursday evening. On Thursday, multiple fire units, air support and heavy equipment battled the blaze. Around 7 p.m. Thursday, the county said that an estimated 300 acres had been burned. The Emergency Operations Center at the Maui Emergency Management Agency was partially activated in response to the wildfire Thursday afternoon, but returned to normal operations Thursday evening.
