A structure fire shut East Manoa Road between Huapala Street and Lowrey Avenue. First responders received the call around 11:04 a.m. Honolulu police said eight officers responded to the scene and the Honolulu Fire Department sent 11 units staffed with 42 firefighters as well. When the first HFD unit arrived at the scene, they found “a working fire on the second floor of a medium-sized, three-story apartment building. A neighbor who did not want to go on camera said “people that were walking outside started banging on the door and one really kind guy even broke down the door with his feet and everyone got out safely.” Officials said an off-duty firefighter was at the right place at the right time and helped people get to safety.
