Hawaii is heading into the dry season and experts said there is a higher risk of wildfires in the coming months.
We’ve seen the devastation wildfires can cause with the tragedy in Lahaina last August. As summer once again draws near, concerns are rising.
Tom Birshard, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said we’re seeing prime conditions for wildfires ahead of schedule.
“The overall picture looks like, as we head into the dry season, drier than normal and potentially an earlier than normal start to the fire weather season,” Birshard explained. “Typically the index there doesn’t cross critical threshold there until August sometime. This year it looks like we might cross those critical thresholds sometime around June.”
