The occupants of a duplex were safely removed from a single-story structure when a fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in southern Iowa City. Iowa City Fire Department officials arrived on scene at the 1200 block of Sandusky Dr. within three minutes of receiving the report, according to a news release. Firefighters encountered fire and smoke coming out of a front window of the home. Officials contained the fire within 10 minutes and the duplex sustained severe fire, smoke and water damage. An attached unit sustained smoke damage. The fire department continues to investigate the cause of the fire and does not yet have a loss estimate. The Red Cross assisted residents of both affected units.
