Anyone who saw a Fort Dodge police vehicle with its red and blue lights flashing parked behind another vehicle on the Kenyon Road Bridge on a recent Sunday evening may have figured it was just another routine traffic stop. But everyone in law enforcement knows there’s essentially no such thing as a routine traffic stop. They know anything can happen at any time. That was the case on that Sunday. The police officer who made the traffic stop became quickly and seriously ill from exposure to what investigators believe was the drug fentanyl. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. The stricken officer was taken to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center by ambulance and received multiple doses of Narcan, a medicine that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. That officer made a full recovery and is back on patrol.
