For thirty-four years, West Liberty resident Curt Newcomb worked to help his community at the West Liberty Volunteer Fire Department (WLVFD). When the WLVFD heard Newcomb had pancreatic cancer, they knew they needed to do something to help their longtime colleague and friend. After several months of diligent planning, the department has put together a benefit to support one of their most dedicated retired members.
According to Kirt Sickels, Fire Chief for the WLVFD, Newcomb put a lot of care into his thirty-four-year career with the department. Holding, “just about every position in the department,” at one time or another, and Newcomb responded to over 100 calls each year for either fire or medical assistance. Sickels elaborated, “he [is] a very dedicated individual. You never had to worry about him. If his pager went off, he was there.”
