Smoke billowed into the cloudy sky as a fire destroyed a hog confinement east of Brighton Monday morning
At 10:28 a.m., the Jefferson County Communications Center received a call about a hog confinement on fire.
The fire was located on Yew Avenue, just outside of Coppock, five miles east of Brighton.
Firefighters worked into the afternoon from different angles to extinguish the blaze. Because of the time of year, they had to fight against the wind.
There were hogs in the confinement and smell of burned hog flesh lingered in the area.
The roof and sides collapsed and only the two metal ends remained standing. A witness said they heard a series of small explosions at the beginning of the fire.
At 10:32 a.m. the Washington Fire Department was called to assist in fighting the fire. Firefighters from Lockridge, Wellman and Fairfield also assisted in fighting the blaze.
