VIDEO: January has been named Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer is the leading cause of death in firefighters, and some Iowa fire departments are working to reverse that trend. The International Association of Fire Fighters says 65% of names added to their Memorial Wall of Honor are people who have died of occupational cancer. The Des Moines Fire Department has made a huge investment to make sure metro firefighters' names aren't added to that list. Station 11 was built specifically to reduce some cancer-causing effects. The garage that holds all of the trucks is completely separated from the living quarters through its ventilation system. In older stations, the fumes from the trucks flow out of the massive garage and through the rest of the building.
